I got inspired by a story of the Star Wars "Extended Universe" and did this painting of a Sith Lord searching for ancient leftovers of his order, only taking an old droid with him to ensure he remains anonymous...
Created in Photoshop CS6. No reference, no textures.
Woah..those details! I can tell you; You got talent man! Are you a concept artist or something in a gamestudio?^^ Incredible amount of detail, color and the composition with a character in the front as close-up, and another one following Also good idea to keep he background pretty clean of details, so the characters jump out
First of all: thank you very much for all these kind words and all these faves! I was away from my computer a few hours now, and just got back... I can tell you I was pretty much overwhelmed, normally I don't get to see that much activity here at once !
Well, and of course I'm very happy to hear you think my work is that good, but actually, I'm far away from working in a game studio... I do make money with graphic design and 3D, but only in a small ad agency that works for hardware stores. This isn't bad, of course, but it's a real struggle sometimes. You see, it means I work with equipment made for most imaginative designs, and what I really do with it is the most uninspired stuff you can think of. Ah well... but I don't want to bore you with this.
If you have the time, I'd be very interested in hearing a bit about what it's like to study game art, it must be fascinating!
Thanks again for your great feedback, I hope we'll write again soon! And I really look forward to your next uploads!
Well, usually I only add friends I know in real, and very good artists with a fantastic gallery only. And you belong to that 2nd category, and for that category I check out about everything in the gallery, and comment & fave the ones I like the most And ofcourse, I tell what I like about it, very important I think^^
I see, well...your level in art made me think of that^^ I used to study graphic design, like...making posters, cleaning up photo's of dirtyness or isolating them,....that stuff. Is that similar to what your task in the company? If so, I totally understand what you're going through man, with exception of the 3D part; In the time I studied that I only used 2D programms.
I have some time now, finally got home haha. Home sweet home, feels great after a work day Well I can tell you something about what we do And I will tell about the education in general, because that makes a little more clear about my opinion
Allright, first things first: The education takes 4 years. First year is orientation, so we get both art as development classes. Also we get a lot of theory classes, in all the years of education. Well I can summarize those theory classes as; Boring. Maths, languages, and other unrelated things. Ofcourse English is an important language to learn, but the homework for those theory classes...pretty damn much
Well, that is the shitty part of the education, now comes the fun stuff [Starting to talk about the first year]. For our art class we start of with real simple stuff, because not everyone is used to draw in the beginning. Some of us, like me, were some more advanced, so we had to do assignments of higher level. Which means they offered us to work forward already, which is good that they are so flexible In the beginning stage we started with basic face proportions, later moved on to simple way of drawing characters. After that we had a short class of perspective, but we would get into that some more in year 2. After 2 semesters we switched to digital coloring techniques. For example, we learned to color with selection tools, to achieve marvel-looks of art. Later we also had to color with the default round brush, in GTA-style These can be found in my galleryfolder Schoolassignments & Game-Art related btw, in case you are bored and want to get a better view on what I just talked about This folder also contains personal works, but well..usually I write in the description if it was an assignment or not[link]
During the 3D classes in 3DsMax, my first year, we started out with the basics aswell. This was totally new for me aswell, since I wasn't into 3D, with exception of a few things I made years back on another school, with a machinery programm called Solid Edge. But since that's very different, I don't count it as a game-art 3D programm. So we started by building up scenes with standard primitives, by just dragging, dropping, moving, composing....etc. Once we all understood it, we moved on to poly modeling. That was for me the breakthrough to do 3D in free time aswell, because it allowed me to model whatever I wanted. I still use this technique, and I love it
At the end of the first year we had to decide what we want to specialize in; Art or development. Well, I already knew that ofcourse; Art! So in the second year, my current year, we started traditional art again. Starting of with anatomy of the human body. I suddenly realized why it was called "specializing", because it was (and is) very difficult compared to those simple characters we used to draw in our first year. With some lessons and self studies I managed to get most of the information into my head. After the anatomy lessons we started with perspective, my favorite lessons I have to say. I am really enthusiast of perspective art, so I REALLY want to become better in it But I have to keep up with the rest aswell, so it isn't that easy These lessons were about environments and interiors. We will still get lessons in drawing vehicles, but I already tried this a bit in my sketchbook, because I just like cars since I used to draw them a lot
About the 3D part for this year, we get 2 different programms; 3Ds Max, like the first year, but also Maya now. We had to get used to it, but I really like Maya when it comes to the controls and functions. With 3Ds Max we continue where we stopped at the end of the first year, and with Maya we started out with the basics. Though, I gotta say most of us understand Maya a lot better than 3DsMax
Also this year we started with our first 3D games. In the first year we only made 2D games with Adobe Flash, now we make 3D games with Unity. Well it doesn't have awesome graphics capabilities, but it will do, we have an amazing developer in our class which makes very impressive games with his team, and it looks really cool Though it would look a lot better in Cry-Engine or so
Next year we will have internship, and I am really excited about that. It will be a half year, the last half year of our next schoolyear to be specific. Than, in the 4th [last] schoolyear, we have another internship for a half year, the first part of the schoolyear. After that it is a matter of doing the finishing touches
That's most of it what I can tell so far, so...the 2D & 3D lessons are great, to my opinion, ofcourse with some own investment And the downside is the lot of theory classes with a huge amount of homework, so...that makes every day a busy day, and I barely have homework-free sundays. But well...the 2D & 3D classes and results get me through I really enjoy going to school for it, much more compared to the time I studied graphic design^^
I hope you got an idea a bit, about how things go here If you have a specific question about something I just told about, don't hesitate to ask if something is not totally clear Your welcome about the feedback and we will write again for sure, no doubts about that! Thanks for the interest, currently I am working further on my 3D character. It's my first one so...we'll see how it turns out to be
